Wayland</name><affiliation wicri:level="1"><nlm:aff id="A1"><addr-line>Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, United Kingdom</addr-line></nlm:aff><country xml:lang="fr">Royaume-Uni</country><wicri:regionArea>Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, Cambridge</wicri:regionArea></affiliation></author></analytic><series><title level="j">Biodiversity Data Journal</title><idno type="ISSN">1314-2836</idno><idno type="eISSN">1314-2828</idno><imprint><date when="2013">2013</date></imprint></series></biblStruct></sourceDesc></fileDesc><profileDesc><textClass></textClass></profileDesc></teiHeader><front><div type="abstract" xml:lang="en"><label>Abstract</label><p><italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">truttae</named-content></named-content></italic> and the <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">bothniensis</named-content></named-content></italic> species complex are common parasites of salmoniform and other fishes in northern Europe. <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">bothniensis</named-content></named-content></italic> and its sibling species <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content> '<named-content content-type="species">bothniensis</named-content>'</named-content></italic> are thought to be closely related to the Nearctic <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">leidyi</named-content></named-content></italic> Van Cleave, 1924 based on morphological similarity and common usage of a mysid intermediate host. This study provides the first analysis of morphological and meristic variation in <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">truttae</named-content></named-content></italic> and expands our knowledge of anatomical variability in the <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">bothniensis</named-content></named-content></italic> group. Morphological variability in <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">truttae</named-content></named-content></italic> was found to be far greater than previously reported, with part of the variance attributable to sexual dimorphism. <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">truttae</named-content></named-content></italic>, the two species of the <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">bothniensis</named-content></named-content></italic> group and <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">leidyi</named-content></named-content></italic> displayed considerable interspecific overlap in the ranges of all conventional morphological characters. However, <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://acanthocephala.sourceforge.net/">Proboscis profiler</ext-link>, a tool for detecting acanthocephalan morphotypes using multivariate analysis of hook morphometrics, successfully separated <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">truttae</named-content></named-content></italic> from the other taxa. The <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">bothniensis</named-content></named-content></italic> species group could not be reliably distinguished from <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">leidyi</named-content></named-content></italic> (or each other), providing further evidence of the affinity of these taxa. Observations on the distribution of <italic><named-content content-type="taxon-name"><named-content content-type="genus">Echinorhynchus</named-content><named-content content-type="species">truttae</named-content></named-content></italic> in its definitive host population are also reported.</p></div></front><back><div1 type="bibliography"><listBibl><biblStruct><analytic><author><name sortKey="Amin, Omar M" uniqKey="Amin O">Omar M.
